Rice – Zubimendi – Valverde vs Man City / PSG
This trio gives Arsenal three distinct jobs, and together they solve the problems City and PSG create in buildup and transition.

1. Buildup + press resistance
Zubimendi sits deepest as the pivot. He’s your metronome, taking the ball from Saliba/Gabriel under pressure, turning, and finding angles. City and PSG press with coordinated traps, so you need a midfielder who won’t panic. That’s him.
Valverde shifts right. He’s the outlet when Zubimendi gets closed down. Instead of going sideways, Valverde takes one touch and drives up the right half-space. Against City’s Rodri + Kovacic, that vertical carry breaks the first line. Against PSG’s Vitinha + Ruiz, it drags their double-pivot out of shape.

Rice covers the left half-space. He’s the safety valve if City overload with Bernardo + Foden, or if PSG’s Dembele cuts inside. He’s also the one who steps into midfield when Arsenal’s fullback pushes high.
2. Out of possession
City and PSG both try to overload central areas. This midfield matches that physically:
- Rice handles the first duel. He wins it or delays it.
- Valverde sweeps behind him. He has the stamina to chase a second ball and cover for Saka if he gets pinned.
- Zubimendi reads passing lanes. He doesn’t chase, he cuts.
You’re no longer relying on Rice to do both the tackling and the carrying. The load splits 3 ways, so you stay compact for 90 minutes.

3. Transition + final third
This is where it gets dangerous for opponents.
- Win the ball: Valverde immediately looks to carry or play Odegaard/Eze in stride.
- Rice arrives late into the box. He’s got 5-7 goals a season in him, and Valverde’s movement creates space for that.
- Zubimendi stays to prevent counters.
Against PSG’s high line, Valverde’s runs behind are a mismatch for their midfielders. Against City’s controlled possession, Rice + Valverde can double-press Rodri and force errors.
Overall shape
You get a 4-3-3 that can become a 4-2-3-1 in defense, with Valverde and Rice as dual 8s. It’s balanced, athletic, and tactically quiet. No glaring holes for Guardiola or Luis Enrique to exploit.
If Arsenal want to dictate instead of react in those games, this is the midfield that does it.
